Dear Colleague,

With a general election looming, and yet few signs of substantial debate about the future of British politics, I thought you might like to hear about the Institute of Ideas’ Pre-election Public Summit, The Battle for Politics, taking place at Goodenough College in central London on Saturday 20 March 2010. Tickets are available now.

A range of discussions – from keynote sessions on 'Vote for what? Setting the agenda for politics to change the world' and ‘They know what we're thinking: changing attitudes to the electorate’ to workshops on issues like immigration and the new politics of class – will seek to open up debate about what's at stake in the election – and what should be on the agenda. Speakers include: Pam Giddy, POWER2010; Professor Frank Furedi, University of Kent; Wes Streeting, NUS president; Gerry Stoker, University of Southampton; Brendan O'Neill, spiked; Kevin Maguire, Daily Mirror; Nick Dusic, Campaign for Science and Engineering; Shane Greer, Total Politics; Bruno Waterfield, Daily Telegraph; human rights campaigner Peter Tatchell, David Goodhart, Prospect, Jeremy Webb, New Scientist, Professor Mike Savage, University of Manchester, and Evan Harris MP.

The Institute of Ideas wants to take the opportunity of this election to re-enfranchise the electorate and put each candidate on the spot by asking them to declare where they stand on a range of key questions.  The summit will launch the IoI’s POLITICAL PLEDGE CARD and ask candidates in the 2010 UK general election if they are prepared to argue and campaign around issues of:

  • FREEDOM & CIVIL LIBERTIES
  • ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT & INNOVATION
  • ARTS, ACADEMIC RESEARCH, EDUCATION AND HEALTH-CARE AS PUBLIC GOODS

For a full list of speakers and sessions see here.

The Pre-election Public Summit, the Battle for Politics, is a must-attend event for anybody who is serious about trying to understand the challenges and opportunities presented and revealed by the forthcoming election. Most importantly, the summit will be a space where ideas can be argued for and fought over without constraint. Free speech allowed!

The event is held at Goodenough College, Mecklenburgh Square, London, WC1N 2AB.

Tickets are on sale now - Institute of Ideas ‘Battle’ series tickets tend to sell out very quickly, so please book now to avoid disappointment!

Please forward this email to interested colleagues. I very much hope you will come and join the debate.

Best wishes,

Claire Fox
